Enya Fontanills Pomares, currently based in Rome, Italy, was born in La Habana, Cuba and raised in Miami, Florida. Painting has been her most prominent form of expression for as long as she can remember. After studying at New World School of the Arts in Miami, her work began to defeat the realm of reality by exposing subconscious thought. She then developed a niche for the significance of objects during her time at California College of the Arts, leading her work to fill up the space with paintings that take the physical responsibility of presenting images in the realm of realistic fiction within existing structures.
Enya's artistic language sits in dialogue between her multiple cultural identities. Her work is derived from a world of social-political issues, travel culture, time and distance between loved ones. By exploring the idea of "home" in contrast with bi-racial combinations, jointure of distinct religions practiced in the same household, and blending cultures of a young migrant, her work is born.
The Cuban-American artist's work now ranges from painting to installation as she continues to use surreal concepts and objects to write present history through art. Allowing the paintings to create a relationship with the current environment and people in it, while immortalizing key moments in our life time.
In October 2001 a child was born in the city of La Habana to a country where freedom of speech is punishable by law and artists had to limit their expression. As she grew up, she compromised her words for art. The habit carried through to the United States, along with the dream of using it to tell her story.
In 2015, Enya was admitted to New World School of the Arts. At the age of thirteen she started taking a two-hour bus ride to Downtown Miami twice a day for the prestige of learning her craft.
In 2019, she received a full-ride to California College of the Arts
for which she relocated to San Francisco.
In 2023, she graduated with a Bachelor's in the Fine Arts for Painting/Drawing
and a minor in Social Practice and Community Engagement.
She is now working on a master's program at Rome Business School for an International Master's in Art and Culture Management.
